I loved Siena, loved it! Scenic and small and gives you more of a feel for the local life. I spent my time in Sienna ‘Urban Hiking’ because pretty much anywhere you walked was worth seeing.
I guess there isn’t anything really that sets Siena apart in terms of landmarks or notable buildings. It has churches, a piazza and is built up high like a fortress on a hill. But all that I loved about Siena was in its small town charm and it’s Tuscan landscape.
It is a place to get away from the other tourists and see what life in Tuscany is like. To really embrace this opportunity I downloaded the audio book ‘Life in Italy’ by the author of Under the Tuscan Sun. As I was ‘hiking’ from my camping spot out of town into the old town I was listening and imagining what it would be like to live in a place like Siena. Actually, let’s be honest, I was mainly thinking about all the great food I could eat.
There was one restaurant that I did come across in my travels that was great value and an excellent setting. I also later found out that they did cooking lessons. I missed out but you don’t have to. Check out Trattoria Fonte Giusta. There isn’t anywhere to book online but they advertise their cooking classes inside the restaurant.
If I were to live like a local then I would definitely travel by Vespa! There were so many cool Vespas hanging about, I was tempted to casually jump on the back of one. Dont know how that would have gone down.
