Croatia won me over fair and square, it probably had the upper hand with its gorgeous scenery and old towns by the sea. I had no idea what to expect when I planned my trip, and I was wonderfully surprised. Split is this fantastic old Roman ruin Palace by the sea. It’s the port for many sailing trips and the door to various fabulous islands.
It’s not often you can claim that you’re staying within the walls of a Palace… and though I technically couldn’t either, it’s very doable in Split. When I arrived late and walked through the beautiful Palace (that is still looking pretty great for it’s age) I could hardly believe it. There was white marble columns and brick tiles all lit up. I even caught the live music and dancing on my way through. The city is very much alive!
Later I found the incredible views and beaches. We made the climb to the top of the bell tower as well as the National Park and weren’t disappointed. I would also have to mention the wonderful food which consists mainly of seafood and rightly so.
Now for the saling, since that is the title of the post. Though I couldn’t go on a yacht and island hopping, as wonderful as that may sound, I was able to visit Hvar island with a couple of friends. It’s the place of the rich and famous and we were ready to do some celebrity spotting.
Unfortunately the Celbs had a day off that day but Hvar was an amazing experience regardless. I really enjoyed being out on the water and we had a sunny day that made it that much more incredible. When on the island we opted to go to Stari Grad the old town where we were able to get away from the crowds and find a patch of water to ourselves.
After a ‘fresh’ swim we headed back for some more glitz and glamour. We climbed to the fortress for a worthy view of Hvar and it’s surrounds. This took a while to soak in before we gathered the energy to walk back to get some gelato. Then we watched a gob-smacking sunset on our way back into Split.
Warning: I found that Croatia, Split in particular, are very fond of their cats. I’ll leave it up to you weather that’s a deal maker or breaker.
