Cinque Terre: The Five Lands

In Italian, Cinque means five and Terre means lands. The Italian’s are pretty straight up with their names because that is exactly what Cinque Terre is. Despite the un-inventive name, Cinque Terre is an amazing place with five awesome towns to explore that are linked by hikes. It may be premature, but I’m going to put it out there and say that this has been my favourite European destination so far.

I think the biggest appeal of these ‘lands’ is the ‘hikability’. I love the fact that you can walk between each village and enjoy amazing sea views along the way. Wake up early one morning, down an espresso then get walking to the next village for a swim. Quench your thirst with a freshly squeezed OJ and refuel with a foccacia and your ready for the next village. Then end the day with some fresh seafood, a glass of local wine and a view of the sunset and you’re set!

So many villages each so beautiful with different characteristics. You’ll be tempted to choose a favourite but I imagine it is as hard as choosing a favourite child. Make sure you pay each one a visit.

Riomaggiare

Full of salty character and charm. A great place to swim and fill up on deep fried anchovies.

Manarola

A tough hike from Riomaggiare because the costal walk is closed at the moment, but it’s oh so worth it! Rows of vineyards, pretty pastels and memorable views. I think Manarola is a secretly my favourite.

Corniglia

A city on a hill that gets left out because visitors are detered by the stairs and lack of swimming. But poor neglected Corniglia is so beautiful and worth the walk. It’s more local and has some amazing views!

Vernazza
A little bit more touristy then his brothers. A great place to go boating and eat some foccatia while dipping your toes in the water.

Monterosso Al Mare

To be honest, Monterosso was the most touristy of them all. He’s popular and loved for his beaches. If you enjoy soaking up the sun and eating gelati then this is the place for you.

La Spezia

I actually stayed in La Spezia while exploring Cinque Terre. It’s a good easily accessible option if you can’t afford the higher prices of staying within the villages.

Step Count: 1, 304, 110

Next Destination: Lake Como
