Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
but if you want to smell lavender,
go to Avignon (just because it doesn’t rhyme doesn’t mean it’s not true).
Seriously, Avignon was so ridiculously pleasant. I could have explored the streets of the old town forever… could have except it was stinking hot. So dusk was the time to explore. Old town Avignon has so much character and is full of so many surprises. That’s were we stayed and no regrets at all. You can also walk into the new town, provided you don’t melt along the way. Do note that it is quite a vigorous walk.
The new town lacks the character of it’s older neighbour. It is however, the perfect place to stroll around before catching a tour into the countryside to sniff some lavender and gaze upon the picturesque landscape of the South of France. My recommendation is to search groupon for a tour deal. We managed to score a tiny tour with a lovely tour guide who catered the tour to our liking. We drove through the beautiful town of Gordes, stopped at a lavender farm, purchased some lavender ice-cream and learnt how lavender oils are produced.
