A Day in Cambridge

The university of Cambridge; prestigious, proper and so pretty. When I think of the likes of Cambridge I can’t help but refer back to what Gilmore Girls has taught me about Yale and Harvard. Different countries, but same thing right? Obviously I therefore knew a lot about elite universities… well not really.

Our day started catching the train from the beautiful Kings Cross Station. If your ever there take a peak at St. Pancreas as well! In about an hour’s time we had arrived in Cambridge and were scoping out a Brunch spot.

We decided on Novi. I ordered the Fried Eggs with Kale and Creamy Feta on house made Quinoa Bread. Yum. My friend ordered Scrambled Eggs with Streaky Bacon on Cornbread.

After brunch we wondered down to the river Cam (because it’s CAMbridge… see I learnt things) and found our punting tour that we had pre-booked. There are heaps of punting tours to choose from and if you do your research and book online you can save money. We went with Cambridge Punt Company. I highly recommend you take a punt and I can put in a good word for that company in particular.

On the tour we learnt about the high profile students of the different colleges as well as the shenanigans that other students got up to. Apparently there is more then one college and all the while I was waiting for the Cambridge College. Another very entertaining factor of our punting experience was watching other tourists try their luck punting for themselves. There was more then one occasion when I thought someone was going overboard for sure.

Now that we had a bit of an idea of the layout and the many bridges we tried to see whether we could have a closer look at these fancy colleges. But first we checked in to Fitzbillies for one of their famous Chelsea buns to inhale later.

It’s pretty difficult to find colleges that are free and open to the public. We did have a bit of a look through the gardens of Saint John’s but weren’t able to find much else. Apparently you can have lunch in the cafeteria at one of the colleges but we arrived too late. We did stumble upon some amazing choir singing in the chapel though.

We stopped outside the Kings Chapel and ate, no, devoured our Chelsea bun. The Kings Chapel has some interesting stories attached to it. Some of the students of Cambridge; the night climbers, would climb the buildings around the campuses and leave a peculiar object as proof. They climbed up one of the spires of the chapel and left a traffic cone.  As the university put scaffolding up to remove it, these students beat them to it. They then climbed the other spire and put it up there.

Bun gone and we proceeded to walk along the River Cam we found our selves at a pub overlooking the river for a cider.

After that, more walking and we checked out the park and more college gardens.

Then we were sucked in the grab some early dinner from the Gourmet Burger Kitchen on the way back to the train. Definitely try the sweet potato fries with baconaise.

So we left educated, slightly more fancy and still no clue how the whole Cambridge University thing works…
